Chess Club

One of the easiest ways to learn to play chess is to join a chess club.  One can join a chess club to play chess as early as grade school.  There are town and cities that offer chess clubs for kids and adults of all ages.  Even many high schools across the country have a chess club.  This is one of the first places many people go to play chess.  You are amongst friends and people you know will take it easy on you, at least for the first game.
One does not need to be a master to play chess.  One can just play chess for fun while others are serious and enter tournaments.  Even in a chess club they have tournaments to determine the chess club champion,  This champion defends his title against those in the chess club that challenge him.  You have to be ranked in that club in a certain place in order to challenge the champion.  Otherwise, you are just there to play chess against everyone else until your game improves and you move up the rankings.

Some real die hard chess fans set up tournaments in their own home.  They invite others over to play chess with their boards.  In a way, playing on your own board gives you that home field advantage so you are more relaxed over your competition.  You can even pick what pieces you want to play with.  Being in a private chess club has some advantages and disadvantages.  You may play with people on a level you have yet to attain, so watch who you sit down with.  You may learn something from someone who has mastered the game.

There are some children out there who learn to play chess on their own and end up beating their parents.  Sometimes ones mind can develop early and it enables one to get a better grasp of the game.  This is why some parents push their kinds into chess club.  They know that playing chess creates a mentality that will enable their child to do better in other subjects.  Some parents play chess with their kids knowing they will lose, but do it for the development of the child.
Some chess clubs in school are very competitive.  They keep stats and have numerous students.  Be prepared to play for along time.  If you are playing with someone else that is new, the game may not last long.  Try to play against someone in the chess club that has been playing for a few years.  Take the time to learn from them so you can better develop and hone your own skills.  The skills you learn today will better prepare you for the tasks of tomorrow.
So if you are one of the many out there that have yet to play chess.  It does not matter what age you are, you can learn the game.  You can find a good family member  friend to teach you the game or join a chess club.  Find others on line to challenge and to grow your wisdom of the game.  Give yourself that edge that will not only help you play a better game of chess, but help you grow more in the game of life.

Chess Board

Over the course of time there have been many chess boards developed.  From your standard wodden chess boards to your all pewter chess boards.  There are many variations depending on how you like to play the game and what surface you like to play on.  There are even chess tables.  Yes, chess tables.  Tables that are exclusive only to chess.  You may be able to turn the board over and play another game like backgammon or Parcheesi.  But depending on your wallet and how often you play will determine what chess boards are right for you.

Value Wood Chess Boards balance the need of a functional and attractive chess boards with cost and quality to create our most affordably priced wood chess board. These are inlaid boards with real wood veneer, a wide frame, and delimiter inlay around the playing squares.  This type of board is good if you like to have your set out for others to see that you are not an expert.  Sometimes chess tables are built in an old world style so it feels you are playing on a table exclusive for chess.

Other wood chess boards available are made by the very best chess board manufacturers in the world including Rechapados Ferrer and Italfama. These are inlaid chess boards made by highly skilled craftsmen using the finest woods and veneers available.  Chess tables made from these manufacturers can vary in price from a few hundred dollars up to a few thousand dollars.  It depends on the craftsmanship and wood used.

Brass chess boards from Manopoulos are the perfect compliment for brass chess sets including their own line of fine brass chess sets. Some  brass chess boards are beautifully accented with an elegant enamel multi-color and lacquered to protect the finish and prevent tarnishing.  This will make sure the set is preserved over time.  Chess tables will not really be made by such heavy metal.  Chess tables would be made of wood first and then have a brass outlay around it to enhance the craftsmanship.

Some chess tables are meant only for chess.  It will have detailed work but the chess board is the top of the chess table,  The table is small enough for two people to sit around and will not even gold any drinks.  Many of the chess tables will have decorative colors and designs to differentiate themselves from other manufacturers.  Some manufacturers have very distinct designs that set them apart form everyone else.  This can be called their trademark.
Buying the right chess board or chess table depends on the consumer and their needs.  If you are an average chess player who plays every now and then, then a nice wood or marble chess board is for you.  If you are someone who like to ssquash friends and family every chance they get, then a nice rosewood round chess table might be for you.  All you have to do is research to see what meets your needs.  My favorite chess set is a handcrafted wooden one I brought home from Aruba.

Chess movies and celebrities http://www.americachess.com/chess-movies.html http://www.americachess.com/chess-movies.html#comments Wed, 30 Sep 2009 11:52:27 +0000 admin http://www.americachess.com/?p=38 Read more »]]> If there are two things that go together it could be chess and celebrities.  Some have made some great chess movies while others have just played chess in a movie.  But there is always something memorable about a scene.  Something always stands out to be different.  Chess and celebrities seem to fit as Forrest Gump would say like peas and carrots.  There have been some very memorable chess movies while others have just fallen flat.  Let us take a look at some of the chess moves that have been aorund and have created scenes we all love to watch.

One notable scene to remember is in the movie X Men.  Now this may not be your stands chess movie, but it was memorable for a reason.  It showed how strategy of Charles Xavier had overcome Magneto and his band of evil mutants.  While they were playing chess with plastic pieces so Magneto could not manipulate the pieces, Magneto laid down his King even though the game was not over.  It showed he had subcome to defeat in a way he did not want to.  After the move was over, Patrick Stewart had taken up chess on a more frequent basis.  So sometimes, chess and celebrities need that one move to get their intrest started.

Another one of the more memorable chess movies is the Shawshank Redemption.  You have Tim Robbins making his own chess pieces.  Since he has all the time in the world in prison, he asks Red, played by Morgan Freeman, to get him a rock hammer.  Iver the time of the move he carves out a full chess set for himself.,  He teaches Red to play chess as it gives them something to take their mind out of those prison walls.  So you can get your head lost in a game of chess and feel relaxed.  For some reason, chess and celebrities seem to make their way onto the silver screen more times than not.

Some unknown chess movies are Sneakers, Snow Dogs, Sling Blade, Night Moves, and Lost Horizon to name a few.  It seems chess and celebrities make their way into many films.  Sometimes chess is not even being played, only mentioned or a chess set is shown.  Some chess movies really focus on the game more than on certain character development or plot lines.  One movie where chess and celebrities really go hand and hand was never shown on camera.  On the set of the 1989 movie Loverboy with Patrick Dempsey, they played chess in his trailer.  Patrick would play against other stars and cast members to release the tension of the set.  SO in this case, chess and celebrities never made it into the screen but still had an impact.

One of the most famous chess movies mentioned Bobby Fischer, but it was not about him.  This 1993 chess movie was adapted to the screen from the book.  This is one film where chess and celebrities really come into focus.  You had Joe Mantegna, Ben Kingsley, Laurence Fishburne, and David Paymer amongst others in this heart warming film about a young boy learning chess.  Even William H. Macy was here as a player.  SO this move was really about chess and celebrities.  But the focus of the movie was on a young boy and not the name stars.  It was chess that brought them all together for one case, to help this boy become a chess champion.

Chess movies have their place in movie culture.  In some cases, chess and celebrities also go hand in hand.  This is one form of  entertainment that does not get its due.  More people need to see what chess is all about.  People need to see how chess can develop ones mind for strategy.  If people even sit down and watch some chess movies they never saw before, they might learn a hideen lesson. About themselves.  Some may learn a new game they never thought about before.  After some movies have finsihed up, some celebrities have taken chess more seriously.  So chess and celebrities will always have their place on the silver screen.

Chess Titles

Over time, some of the best chess players ever have won or received chess titles.  Chess titles are given to some of the best chess players ever.  These titles are like titles in other sports.  You get chess titles for certain victories.  Some chess titles have more honor than other like titles in boxing or other sports.  Some of the best chess players ever may not have received some of the chess titles they deserved.  It depends on the player and how they received their win/loss record.  Let us take a look at one of the best chess players ever.

Jose Capablanca is known for being one of the best chess players ever.  He was a world chess champion amongst other chess titles.  He had a score of 318 wins, 249 draws, and only 34 losses in match and tournament play between 1909 and 1939.  No other master has sustained so few losses over such a period of time. Capablanca was renowned for his ability to instantly and accurately evaluate chess positions. Capablanca liked to control the position and to focus only on elements he felt were necessary to achieve victory. His endgame technique was legendary. It is often said that you can discover the true strength of a player by looking at how he handles endgames. If this is the case then Capablanca was one of the best chess players ever.

Back in Capablancas day, you could only become world champion.  It took a while for more chess titles to be developed.  A Grandmaster is a chess title awarded to world-class chess masters. Apart from World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest chess title a chess player can attain.  The best chess players ever attempt to reach this goal and have this coveted chess title.  After Grandmaster there is an International Grandmaster.  The conditions are similar to GM, but less demanding.  This all depends on how many points you have and how you are ranked.  There is also a FIDE Master and Candidate Master.  All these chess titles can be awarded to an individual for a lifetime.

The best chess players ever are awarded points according to the Elo rating system.  Elo is a statistical system  based on assumption that the chess performance of each player in their games is a random variable. Arpad Elo thought of a player’s true skill as the average of that player’s performance random variable, and showed how to estimate the average from results of player’s games. The USCF implemented Elo’s suggestions in 1960, and the system quickly gained recognition as being both fairer and more accurate than older systems.  This is how the best chess players ever are ranked today.
In the early 1900’s, the best chess players ever only went after one title, World Champion.  Today with the Elo system and various ruling boards, there are more chess titles one can attain.  The more you play and the better your play, the higher you will score on the Elo system.  All it takes is a keen mind, sharp thinking, and winning games to be considered one of the best chess players ever.

Chess Tactics

In chess, a chess tactic refers to a short sequence of moves which limits the opponent’s options and may result in tangible gain. Chess tactics are usually contrasted to strategy, in which advantages take longer to be realized, and the opponent is less constrained in responding.  When developed, these moves will show you how to win in chess

Play Poker

The fundamental building blocks of chess tactics are two-move sequences in which the first move poses a double threat. The opponent is unable to respond to both threats in one move, so the first player realizes an advantage on the second move. This includes forks, skewers, batteries, discovered attacks, undermining, overloading,  deflection, and interference. Pins also fall into this category to some extent, although it is common for a defending player to relieve neither of the two threats posed by a pin, in which case the attacking player commonly maintains the pin for a longer period of time. A pin is therefore sometimes more strategic than tactical.

Often chess tactics of several types are conjoined in a combination. A combination, while still constraining the opponent’s responses, takes several moves to obtain an advantage, and thus is considered deeper and more spectacular than the basic chess tactics listed above.  This method of how to win at chess takes time to develop.

Chess computers are considered superhuman at chess tactics, but rather poor at strategy. They know how to win at chess.  Computers do not think about chess tactics in human terms (fork, skewer, etc.); rather, they apply very simple rules to evaluate hundreds of thousands of sequences, the vast majority of which are spurious.  By doing this, the computer analyzes many different scenarios on how to win at chess.

Knowing how to win at chess takes time and knowing the right chess tactics.  You can put many different chess tactics together to form your own strategy.  You will be able to have your own type of game play, where your strengths and weaknesses are so you can defend yourself from others chess tactics.  Knowing this will show you not just how to win at chess, but knowing your opponents strategy as well.

Knowing how to win at chess will take time.  Not everyone knows how to win at chess.  Some just play for fun in hoping they will win but do not put the right frame of mind into it.  If you really want to know how to win at chess, you will take time to master the art of winning, master the moves and pieces.  Create your own chess tactics so you can increase your game play.  By doing this, you will not only know how to win at chess, but you will know how to continue winning at chess.

So before you decide to challenge someone you know has been playing longer than, you, make sure you know your opponent.  Watch him play a few times.  Know his moves, his strategy, and his chess tactics.  Only by studying your opponent will you really know how to win in chess.

Chess Strategy

If one is to become a true chess master one has to take chess lessons to learn proper chess strategy.  You have to learn to crawl before you can walk.  Once you have a grasp of the basic moves and functions of the game pieces, you have to change how you think about game playing.  Playing chess takes a lot of concentration if you really want to master chess strategy.  The more chess lessons one gets the more your skill will improve.  Obtaining chess lessons from a seasoned professional is the main way to go if you would like to make a presence in the chess world.

True chess strategy is not learned overnight.  One has to master it playing game after game for years.  But taking the right chess lessons with the right teacher can speed up that process.  One may have a teacher than goes slow so you can fully understand not just the game, but the movees you are making.  Other teachers may move fast so you will have to get a grasp on moves and chess strategy faster.  Either approach will work, just depends on what your learning curve is.  Find a teacher you know will work with you at a speed you are comfortable with learning about the game.

During some chess lessons, you should learn about the pieces and their movements.  Putting the right moves together in a specific sequence will allow you to better pick your opponents moves apart and take down key pieces.  This is great chess strategy, learning how to think a certain number of moves ahead so you can almost predict what moves your opponent will make.  This type of chess strategy is what the military tries to do.  They try to predict their opponents moves ahead of time and base a strategy aorund that.  The same goes for chess strategy.  SO start thinking like a military leader.

One may ask why they need chess lessons to learn about chess strategy.  Well, if you would like to have any chance of winning a game, then you know how important it is to learn.  Your friends might have learned concepts or have been playing a lot longer than you.  So taking chess lessons is very important to truly understand the game.  It takes a little more than just moving your pieces around a board and taking down your opponent.  There is important chess strategy one much know even to take advantage of the simplest board moves.

So chess lessons would make any novice or expert into a better player.  Find a teacher that you know has mastered the game.  One that can show you tips and tricks you or no one else may know about.  This is the tru key to chess stratefy, knowing moves no one else does.  So taking chess lessons is nothing to be ashamed of, everyone has to learn one way or the other.  You can take chess lessons on line or find someone close that you know has a grasp of chess.  So sometime soon, you will be the one saying checkmate to your friends.

Chess Clock

Over the period of chess history, many chess champions have learned the artful use of how to maintain the chess clock.  One can not become a master in chess unless they learn how to manage the chess clock.  You may be timed on some moves or you can have all the time in the world.  The truth is if you really wants to be one of the true chess champions, you had better learn the skill of managing the chess clock.

The chess clock consists of two adjacent clocks and buttons to stop one clock while starting the other, such that the two component chess clocks never run simultaneously. Chess clocks are used in two-player games where the players move in turn. The purpose is to keep track of the total time each player takes for his or her own moves, and ensure that neither player overly delays the game.

True chess champions know how to use the chess clock to their advantage.  Chess champions may make fast moves early in the game which leaves the players more time to consider more complex and unfamiliar positions later.  A true chess champions knows how to manage the clock so they save the most time until the end of the game when it is really needed.  The chess clock will always be keeping the time, even after they have stopped the chess clock.
The simplest time control is “sudden death”, in which players must make a predetermined number of moves in a certain amount of time or forfeit immediately. A particularly popular variant in informal play is blitz chess, in which each player is given five minutes on the chess clock for the entire game.  True chess champions have played in this situation and know what moves they need to make in order to maintain a winning edge over their opponent,

Some chess champions will lure their opponent into a situation where they know they will be at an advantage.  They might appear weak to throw off their opponent and then towards the end of the game, make some masterful moves to gain control over the game and the chess clock.
Sometimes chess champions will deliberately take time off the chess clock.  They might do this in situations where they know their opponent well and know how fast of a game it can be.  It may be a fast game if both people are looking for dominance.  But to the contrary, some of the biggest chess champions will take the game slowly, watching the board and laying out strategy perfectly.  Knowing where you stand on the game clock is important ink nowing how to create great strategy.

So if one wants to be considered a true chess champion, one must play hundreds of games against ranked opponents.  The better you play and the more you win, the more points you will accrue and the higher you will climb on the leader boards.  Only when you reach a certain point of chess mastery will you become one of the true chess champions.

3D Chess

Since the invention of computers, people have found many different ways to not just play chess on line, but develop chess art for chess sets.  Developers are using software to create 3D chess pieces and game boards for easier development.  Having an outline on the computer makes it easier for designers to create chess art on both the boards and pieces.  Some have even developed 3D chess games that can be used online.  So 3D chess is not just being used by creators of chess games and pieces, but to also play 3D chess on line.

Chess art can be very basic or extremely detailed.  This can be done by mass manufacturing or hand crafted with great detail.  Some chess art is done with the smallest brushes to create a masterpiece of work for chess.  Some companies use a 3D chess outline to design not just the pieces, but the chess art as well.  Game developers spend hours on end just developing the pieces and the art so they have a chess set they know will be attractive to the public.  Time and research goes into chess art to make sure it is what people want to buy.

People also want to play 3D chess.  It gives people a better view of the board and a better angle on their game strategy.  You can move the camera angle around so you can view the virtual game board from any angle.  Computer chess art can also be changed.  If you have a specific chess game on your computer, you are able to change the chess art of the pieces.  Some game designers give people the option of the designs they want to play with for any given game.  3D chess allows the player not just a better view of the game board, but colorful options for each game you play.
3D chess  makes the game more fun to play.  You have a better view of the board and sometimes, depending on the game designer, it brings the pieces to life.  The pieces can be animated in some cases.  At that point, the chess art can be viewed in ways never thought possible.  If you saw a King on the board in all his glory in true 3D chess animation, you would see chess art in angles not seen on a traditional 2D figure.  So 3D chess not only make the game that much more exciting, but it bring chess to  life in a way you never though possible.

So take the time to search out website that offer chess in different ways.  Look for game boards and settings that really stand out on your computer.  Look for chess art that makes you want to play.  You may even find a game board and pieces at your local toy store that has very detailed colors and pieces..  Always keep in mind that there is a team of people always deciding on what art should be used to make the game stand out in a way that makes you want to play chess.
